Traprock Ridge Work Parties

We invite you to join our friendly group of dedicated conservationists in helping to maintain trails, remove invasive species, and plant native vegetation.

Late July through mid-October is prime time to work on invasive species. Our invasive plant workdays provide hands-on experience clearing invasive plants and help us in the effort to replace invasives with native species in our community. You will learn what plants are invasive to our area and how to treat them to hinder further growth.

It’s a good idea to wear long pants, long sleeves, socks, sturdy shoes, work gloves, bug spray, and sunscreen. Bring water to drink, and loppers and hand saws, if you have them.

Standing Work Parties – Saturdays 9:30-11:30 am

August 15, 2026: Hawk Hill Farm, 20 Duncaster Rd, Bloomfield

We will be beating back the brush that is growing into the trail, mostly honeysuckle and multiflora rose. Bring loppers and hedge trimmers. Park at LaSalette Park and we will be driven up to the work area where Hawk Hill meets LaSalette.

August 22, 2026: Stout Family Fields, 21 & 25 Stone Hill Rd, Bloomfield

We will be working in “the island,” or the wetland copse, in the south field, which is getting overrun with roses and border privet. Bring clippers and loppers. Park at the Stone Hill cul-de-sac.

You can also check out the Pinchot sycamore seedlings, which are thriving there, as well as yellow Indiangrass, giant goldenrod, Allegheny Monkeyflower, high bush blueberry, winterberry, swamp azalea, and asters – all native plants that we installed there in 2024 thanks to a grant from the Hartford Audubon Society.

August 29, 2026: Ian Clark Preserve, Kimberly Rd, East Granby

It’s a rose party! Dress in armor and bring loppers. Park across from 140 Kimberly Road, being careful to not block the driveway.

September 5, 2026: Clark Preserve, 12 Clark Dr, West Hartford

We will be weeding the pollinator garden, which is thriving! This should be a short, easy party. Stop by and check out the garden even if you don’t feel like working. Park across from 15 Clark Drive.

Past Work Parties:

August 8, 2026: Orchard Preserve, 35 & 45 Orchard Rd, West Hartford

Lots of invasives at Orchard! Winged euonymus, common buckthorn and amur honeysuckle – take your pick. Use bug spray and dress for poison ivy. Bring loppers and hand saws if you have them. Parking is along the road apron. Look for a silver RAV4.

August 1, 2026: Evans Family Fields, Bloomfield

We will be cutting and painting winged euonymus, multiflora rose, bittersweet, you name it! Bring loppers and hand saws if you have them and use insect repellent. Parking is between 236 & 240 Tunxis Ave. Look for the Traprock Ridge sign.

July 25, 2026: Eastfield Farms, East Granby

The sides of the path at Eastfield Farms need to be beaten back so the steward can get the mower through there without getting torn up. If you like multiflora rose, Eastfield Farms is the property for you! Bring loppers and wear leather gloves. You can explore the 1/4-mile loop trail around pond when we are finished. Park at the end of the cul-de-sac on Wintergreen Lane.

July 18, 2026: Pond Meadow, East Granby

We will be pulling and bagging Japanese knotweed, which has already been drastically knocked back by pulling and bagging it for the last 4 years. It’s amazing how many other plants have moved in where it was all knotweed before. Parking is next to 8 Pond Lane (near the bench).
